Proglodytes Playlist is a curated list of songs that I’ll add to each week. Most of them will feature new(er) bands, because the most important mission at Proglodytes is to share currently active, progressive leaning groups with the world, but occasionally I will include older songs as a tribute or a commemoration of an anniversary.
On this week’s Proglodytes Playlist:
Ben Levin: “The Wave That Got Away”
I love Ben Levin- as a person and as an artist. This latest music release from the Ben Levin camp came out as a “live EP” and features frequent collaborators like his wife and bandmate Jessica, Kyle Harris, and Josh Friedman, but also features an 8 person choir. This EP features 5 introspective songs with subdued arrangements and intimate lyrics. I highly recommend setting aside 20 minutes to watch or listen to this.
DOMi & JD Beck: “Sniff”
Good lord, this video is insane. Young drumming phenom JD Beck plays impossibly fast, yet with finesse and groovee, and French prodigy DOMi is impossible to keep up with. This entire session is mind blowing, if you get a chance to check it out.
Igorrr: “Parpaing”
I love music that defies description, and Igorrr excels in this arena. Take the song “Houmous” from their album Savage Sinisoid– in only 3 minutes and 31 seconds, you hear accordions, blast beasts, screaming, electronica, 8 bit arpeggios, and chicken clucks. They just premiered a track (from their upcoming album Spirituality and Distortion) that features the brutal, guttural growls of legendary death metal vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher (of Cannibal Corpse fame), along with a chiptune breakdown. Warning: it’s not for the faint of heart.

It seems my ignorance knows no bounds. (Can ‘ignorance’ know anything? 🤔)
I didn’t know Ben Levin plays the piano (and does it rather well), I didn’t know he’s married to Jessica Kion and I didn’t know he writes intimate songs.
I’d never heard of DOMi, either, but she’s terrific. As, of course, is JD Beck.
I really can’t get on with Igorr, though. Sometimes ignorance can be blissful.

Glad you took the time! I think Ben would say he’s primarily a guitarist and songwriter, so I think the piano was a surprise to many. And yes, I knew that Igorrr would be too much for many- they’re sort of like Mr. Bungle on steroids. That’s why I included a warning label 🙂
